My work, titled 'Umma' (meaning "mother' in Malayalam) depicting my mother in her wedding saree, is a dedication to the women in my family. We tend to view women solely through the lens of caregiving, overlooking the fact that they are individuals with dreams, ambitions and lives of their own. Through our lens we strip their individuality and self identity, that was built on their thoughts, interests, challenges and struggles. This piece is a reminder that before they became our ummas, they were dreamers, architects, poets, andresilient souls.
